Reflection - Technology Disconnect

Okay... So as a 19 year old who grew up while technology has been evolving continuously, a large portion of my life involves the use of technology. This project, however, wasn't nearly as hard as I was expecting.

On Friday, May 26th, I flew to Chicago, Illinois to stay with my boyfriend and his family in Cary, Illinois. I used my phone on the plane and until I connected with him at the airport. As soon as we got to his house, I was exhausted and overwhelmed from the long day I had (awake early for an early flight). I ended up ditching my phone in one of my bags and left it there for the rest of the day. I wasn't planning on having that first day be the day I would disconnect but it seemed to work out best that way.

I got settled in and took a nap for a little while. Around dinner time, some family friends came over for dinner and a little party. I got to meet these new people and I didn't even notice that my phone, which is usually like another limb, was upstairs in a bag. I found myself enjoying the night so much more than usual because I felt more engaged in the conversations.

The only time it was slightly difficult for me to not have my phone was when I was about to go to bed. I usually unwind by checking social media and I fall asleep better with music playing. I survived nevertheless. I was so exhausted from the traveling and socializing that I pretty much passed out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

The next day we went boating after lunch and I didn't even notice that my phone was still at the house. It was so nice to sit on the boat and read while trying not to get a sunburn. I really enjoyed the time I was disconnected. It was my first day on vacation so I found myself leaving my phone behind for other things throughout the rest of the trip, too.

This was a great way for me to really connect to my surroundings and the people I was visiting. I thought it was going to be the hardest thing I've ever done but the time went by faster than I was expecting. I will probably find another day to disconnect if it works with my schedule because I felt relaxed after completing this project.
